Today's the return of a Southwest Michigan tradition in Eau Claire. It's the 41st International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm. Last year, Matt "BB Gun" Krause won, marking the 25th time in 40 years someone from his family took the top honors. Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm owner Herb Teichman started the tournament in 1974 as a bit of fun to mark the tart cherry harvest. Krause's father and older brother have also won in past years. As for the cherries, MSU Extension tells us sweet cherry harvest is in full swing and will move quickly due to a light crop and warm temperatures. Tart cherries in this part of the state aren't quite ready yet.
