One arrest for boating under the influence and nine tickets. Those are the results of Operation Dry Water in Van Buren County at the end of June. The three-day enforcement resulted in Van Buren County Sheriff's Office Marine Deputies making contact with 296 boaters and stopping 72 vessels. 84 warnings were given out. Operation Dry Water is a national effort to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and boating. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in recreational boater deaths. Since 2009, the year Operation Dry Water launched, there has been a 37 percent drop in the number of boater deaths where alcohol use was the known primary contributing factor, according to the 2013 U.S. Coast Guard Recreational Boating Statistics.
