St. Joseph is a small town, but while it may feel like it sometimes, this isn't Mayberry. The city's public safety department is urging people to keep their car doors locked to avoid being the victim of a crime. Several larcenies happened on Saturday throughout the city from unlocked vehicles, with cell phones, GPS devices, cell phone chargers, headphones and loose change being among the items stolen. The most expensive theft was that of a one-karat diamond ring worth over $8,000. Common sense and police tell you not to keep anything of value in sight when you leave your car, and officers are recommending keeping the car locked even when parked in your own garage. Another tip is to keep your outside lights on at the house overnight to discourage thieves.
