New Recall Petitions Filed Against BH Mayor Hightower

Once again, Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower is the subject of recall petitions. Quacy Roberts of Benton Harbor has submitted petition language to recall the mayor that is identical to the recall the mayor is currently under. It's not clear if another petition drive can start, given the earlier recall was simply suspended and not tossed. The "Herald Palladium" reports a clarity hearing will be held July 1 at the Berrien County Courthouse. Just before the May 5 recall election was to be held, Judge John Dewane issued a stay at the request of Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler due to issues with the petition dates and signatures. James Cornelius of Benton Harbor and activist Ed Pinkney of Benton Township are both facing election fraud charges related to those petitions. There remains a chance their initial recall could still be held on November 4, depending on what is learned at a trial separate from the criminal proceedings against Pinkney and Cornelius.
