Pokagon Band: The R-Word Crosses The Line For Us

The U.S. Patent Office rescinded the Washington Redskins trademark protection Thursday because the name is disparaging to Native Americans. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says pretty soon, team owner Daniel Snyder will have no choice but to change the Redskins team name.

When contacted by our newsroom for comment concerning the use of such nicknames, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians said in a statement, quote, "the R-word crosses the line for us. Native American names and images in sports are a concern to many Pokagons, but issues like fighting diabetes, providing safe and affordable housing, and getting a good education are our most pressing topics." Locally, Paw Paw High School's sports teams are known as the Redskins, while Saugatuck and Hartford are both the Indians, and Dowagiac uses the Chieftans nickname.
