Former Road Commission Worker: It's A Powder Keg

A former Berrien County Road Commission employee is speaking out concerning ongoing problems at the road agency. Keith Schmidt of Coloma told the Berrien County Commission that they need to take action, especially with the BCRC under a federal investigation. He says things have been quiet from employees over the past few months for a reason.

The County Commission voted several months ago to not take over the road commission, deciding instead to wait for the results of the federal probe and to give managing director Louis Csokasy time to turn things around. Schmidt also spoke up at the commission's night meeting earlier this month in Baroda, and complained that no commissioners approached him afterward to learn what he knows. A federal grand jury is looking over financial records of the road commission from 2009 to 2012 after employees alleged financial mismanagement of highway money two years ago.
