Proos: New Audit Points To Waste In Medicaid Spending

State Senator John Proos says $160-million of wasteful spending by the Michigan Department of Human Services could have gone to roads and education. The auditor general reported the departments paid in-home care providers $160 million from October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2013 without getting proper documentation or ensuring the patients received the care.

That $160-million figure is 18% of its total expenditures during the three-year period. The state will also start to conduct criminal background checks on workers who care for disabled Medicaid recipients in their homes. The same audit flagged about 3,800 workers with felony convictions.
