City Goes After Grant To Fund Tasers, Wearable Cameras For Police

Benton Harbor is going after a grant to fund tasers and wearable cameras for city police. Assistant City Manager Marja Winters says an application for a Justice Assistance Grant will be submitted Friday.

Berrien County will serve as the financial agent to do the grant work.

If the $12,000 is received, the money will pay for 20 new cameras and 5 new tasers. Acting Director of Police Services Dan MaGinnis says the cameras have a 12 hour battery cycle.

He says the equipment needs to be updated, especially the tasers, which were bought in 2006.

McGinnis says 20 cameras and 5 tasers would be purchased. The cameras would utilize cloud technology to store captured video.
