City Pumps Brakes On Purchase Of New Vehicles

Requesting more information and research, the Benton Harbor City Commission Monday voted down the purchase of four new police vehicles for the Department of Public Safety. Commissioners Marcus Muhammad, Mary Alice Adams, Trenton Bowens, and Juanita Henry all voted to not buy the new Ford Explorers. Marcus Muhammad, who isn't against new vehicles, is simply requesting a report of the current fleet.

City Manager Darwin Watson says the purchase is already budgeted, and that the department needs reliable transportation to do their daily job.

The purchase would have totaled about $171,000. Watson says the City has already spent this fiscal year $100,000 in repair costs on the current fleet of vehicles.
