YMCA Is Making Room, Inside And Out

The Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA is a quarter of a million dollars closer to its campaign goal for facility renovations. Local philanthropists Merlin and Caroyln Hanson have donated $250,000 to kick off the public phase of the YMCA Capital Campaign. The campaign started in June and asks the question, "Y Renew the YMCA?" Executive Director Mike Ahern says the website helps answers that question.

8,500 square feet will be added to the building on Hollywood Road in St. Joe. The new face of the Y will expand parking and create walking trails outside, while expanding meeting space inside. It will create a child development center for preschools and other school aged kids. Further improvements include new fitness studios and an expanded weight room. The project is projected to cost $3.8-million. The campaign has already raised $2.5-million. YMCA officials plan to break ground on the project in August.
