Berrien County Schools Adding Security Layer

Eight school districts around Berrien County and Berrien RESA are installing a new safety service. Bridgman was the first to sign on with NaviGate Prepared, which stores emergency plans and information including call lists, staff photos, building maps and more. It is used by first responders to get immediate and real-time access using any device connected to the Internet according Bridgman Superintendent Shane Peters

Listen:

Bridgman has used it twice - once for a lockdown drill with the Berrien County Sheriff's Department and one other time this spring when the Rite Aid in town had a bomb threat. With more than 70 school shootings happening in the U.S. since the Sandy Hook massacre in December 2012 according to the Huffington Post, Peters says the new system will be a great help if anything like that ever happens around here.

He adds it can also be used for more likely scenarios such as electrical problems, water pipe issues, or medical emergencies with students. Berrien Springs, Brandywine, Buchanan, Lakeshore, New Buffalo, River Valley, St. Joseph and Watervliet are all implementing the system.
