St. Joseph High School Band Director Wants Meeting With Top Brass

St. Joseph High School and Upton Middle School band director Aaron Engleman wants to meet with district officials about changes that are being made to his schedule and the band programs at the high school and Upton Middle School. He went before the school board on Monday seeking the meeting according to the "Herald Palladium." Engleman wants to talk about how difficult it has become to recruit students into the band program and to manage it, especially with administrators cutting his pay by 20%, taking away time to administer the program, and taking a class away from the director. Some of the time eliminated is in what was called "zero hour" before the school day started, where Engleman said over 40% of band members used the time for extra instruction to fulfill their elective requirements. School board member Bill Chickering blamed state lawmakers for passing educational mandates that turn all schools into "cookie-cutter education," adding the district has tried to avoid being like everyone else.
