Tidal Wave Of Support Floods Social Media For Silver Beach Pizza

Based on the comments posted on all of our radio station Facebook pages, and, St. Joseph City Commissioners Jeff Richards and Mary Goff may be the only two people in the area opposed to the expansion plans of Silver Beach Pizza. The community response has been overwhelmingly behind Tony Bertig's proposal to add a second level with seating for another 70 patrons that can also be rented out for private events and meetings. We opened up the phones in the newsroom for people to sound off on the issue.

Bernt Krebs is in the camp that the restaurant should be allowed to grow.

Bertig has gone before the St. Joseph City Commission twice with plans. Earlier this year, the objection was the first plan blocked the view of the Whirlpool Fountain from the bluff. That's been addressed by moving the expansion off of the top of the building and as a new construction to the south, but Goff and Richards complained that the new plan blocks the view of the grass in the park.

City Commissioner Chris Heugel and Mayor Mike Garey are solidly backing Silver Beach Pizza's plans with a few tweaks to how things look at the bottom of the ramp coming down the bluff. With Richards and Goff opposed, Mayor Pro Tem Fran Chickering would be the swing vote. She said Monday she would like to see the proposed addition lowered by about two to four feet, and that may be enough to win her support. No vote was taken on Monday night, and a timeline for Bertig to return with new plans has not been decided.
