Activist Headed To Trial In July On Election Forgery And Other Charges

The trial for activist Edward Pinkney of Benton Township on election forgery and other charges will start the week of July 21 in St. Joseph. The 65-year-old was bound over for trial Thursday afternoon, and jury selection for his case will start on July 17. Pinkney is accused of changing the dates on five petitions that sought the recall of Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower over the mayor's vote against putting a city income tax on the November ballot last year. The recall election did not happen in May and remains in limbo due to legal issues surrounding the petition signatures. If Pinkney is convicted, he faces up to five years in prison on the election forgery charge and would likely serve the maximum due to his 2007 conviction on similar charges and another conviction in 1999.
