Prosecutor Clears Mayor Hightower Of Accusations By Activist, Convicted Felon

No charges will be filed against Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower by the Berrien County Prosecutors Office. Activist and convicted felon Ed Pinkney had accused the mayor of manufacturing evidence against him that led to Pinkney being charged with election fraud in April. He claimed Hightower coerced three people to sign letters saying they signed recall petitions that they didn't understand. According to the "Herald Palladium," Berrien County Prosecutor Michael Sepic sent a memo to the sheriff's department yesterday telling police there would not be any charges against Hightower. Sepic noted investigators found no evidence of force or intimidation by the mayor. Questions surrounding the validity of the recall petitions forced Berrien County Trial Judge John Dewane to postpone the May 6 mayoral recall election in Benton Harbor, and he plans to have that case wrapped up this summer. Pinkney is under house arrest in Benton Township awaiting trial.
