If you plan on driving through downtown Berrien Springs over the next week expect backups. MDOT is doing road work on the M-139 Bridge over the St. Joseph River. Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Deputy Police Chief Rick Smiedendorf says traffic Tuesday afternoon going south was backed up for over a mile for people waiting to head out of town. To ease the traffic MDOT has increased the green light time for southbound traffic, and can adjust the northbound time accordingly. During peak travel times, (7-8am and 3-6pm) officials say an alternate route should be considered. Do not block intersections if you are in the line of traffic. Make sure you can clear and intersection before crossing it when in a line of slow moving traffic. The bridge work is expected to be done June 6.
