Commissioner Marcus Muhammad Makes Wants Financial Answers From City

Benton Harbor City Commissioner Marcus Muhammad is asking City Manager Darwin Watson to provide the city commission with the total amount paid to former emergency managers Joe Harris and Tony Saunders. He's asking for salary information, fringe benefits, gas card allowances and more along with financial details on lawsuits from the city's time under state control.

One lawsuit involving former Crystal Springs Cemetery director Tony Benhart was recently settled, with Benhart receiving over $75,000. Former building inspector Barney Martlew of Portage told the city commission this week that the city needs to pay him $76,000 for work that was in progress when Harris fired him in 2011. The courts awarded Martlew and his business partner that settlement in 2012, and it has yet to be paid.
