Former Building Inspector Says City Owes Him Over $76,000

A former Benton Harbor building inspector says the City owes him over $76,000. Barney Martlew of Portage told the City Commission this week that former Emergency Manager Joseph Harris terminated his contract in January 2011.

After multiple letters and phone calls to Harris, Martlew and his business partner filed a lawsuit through the Berrien County Circuit Court.

The City has 42 days from May 1 to file an appeal if that is what the City Commission decides to do. The Benton Harbor Receivership Transition Advisory Board will then have final say on their decision.
