Berrien County K-9s To Receive Ballistics Vests

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department K-9 units will soon have ballistic vests. A nationwide Groupon event organized by the nonprofit group Vested Interest in K-9s Incorporated raised the money for the vests at no cost to Berrien County according to Lieutenant Robert Boyce.

Listen:

The opportunity for the vests came up as the handlers for Nero and Pokky were at a training seminar. Boyce tells us they will be receiving the vests within the next several weeks.

Over $335,000 was raised by the group in February and March to pay for vests for 350 police dogs nationwide. In one week last year, Vested Interest for K-9s raised over $155,000 and put that money toward providing vests for 163 law enforcement dogs in 30 states. The money was raised through a suggested $10 donation when people bought a Groupon coupon.
