Benton Harbor Commissioner David Shaw Convicted

Benton Harbor City Commissioner David Shaw will find out June 23 how long he will be in prison following his conviction Friday on two counts of resisting and obstructing police. Shaw faces between two and six years behind bars depending on if he is sentenced as an habitual offender due to his February 1996 conviction for attempted fleeing and eluding. An all-white jury returned a guilty verdict against Shaw after less than two hours of deliberations on Friday. Per the city charter, Shaw can no longer serve on the city commission due to being found guilty of a felony, but his attorney says an appeal might be filed after sentencing. He was arrested in October following a heated argument with his wife outside AJ's Lounge on Pipestone Road. When city patrolman Hothman Misane heard the argument, he walked up to investigate and testified Shaw swatted away his hands during a pat-down and it took several officers to get him into handcuffs.
