St. Joseph Couple Fails In Attempt To Rezone Parts Of Three Streets

One couple in St. Joseph made the attempt to rezone - on their own dime - parts of three streets in the city simply so they could make changes to their own home. Tom Jeffers and Dr. Elizabeth Jeffers laid out their plan to the St. Joseph City Commission unsuccessfully on Monday night. At one point, he said he had to publicly dispel rumors that had popped up surrounding the newlywed couple.

While Jeffers is from Ohio, he noted his wife has roots in St. Joseph and was born at Mercy Hospital as he tried to garner support for their idea.

The Jeffers recently purchased 1404 Lake Boulevard and found it is not in compliance with the current city zoning, which was changed in 2007. Tom Jeffers noted 23 of the 28 properties they sought to rezone on Lake Boulevard, Lake Court and Lake Shore Drive were also noncompliant. He was quickly and somewhat tersely reminded by the city commission that the master plan is under review soon, and those sorts of issues would be discussed. Several neighbors also spoke out in opposition.

The couple pulled their request before a vote could be held.
