St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation Announces Distinguished Alumni Winners

St. Joseph City Commissioner Mary Goff, Vice Admiral David Bennett, Consolidated Die Casting co-founder Edward Schalon and special education expert Donna Tinberg are the winners of the Distinguished Alumni Awards this year from the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation. Schalon is to receive the award posthumously, as he died in 2008. In addition to co-founding Consolidated Die Casting in Dowagiac, he was among the founders of Grand Valley State University. Goff has been on the St. Joseph City Commission for 28 years and was the city's first female mayor from 1998 to 2007. Vice Admiral Bennett served for 37 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring in 1995 as the Naval Inspector General. Tinberg spent several decades developing new strategies for special education teachers and founded Thayer-North Educational Consulting LLC this year after retiring. A special ceremony will be held prior to St. Joseph High School commencement on June 8 at Dickinson Stadium to honor the Distinguished Alumni Award winners.
