Federal grant money from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is coming to Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow are announcing the nearly $700,000 grant for the Harbor Shores transient marina as part of $3 million from the Boating Infrastructure Grant program. Other recipients are in East Tawas and Wyandotte. In a statement, Levin notes recreational boating is a "major part of Michigan culture and a big driver of the Michigan economy." The grant program helps to pay for the construction, renovation or maintenance of boating facilities for recreational vessels. Matching funds must be in place in order to qualify, and the program is paid for through taxes on boating fuel and equipment that go to the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund.
