New Buffalo Mayor Donna Messinger and City Councilmember Ray Lawson are facing recall challenges Tuesday. Margaret Murray and Si-Osiri are running against Messinger for the mayor's office. George Scarlatis rounded up enough petition signatures to challenge Lawson. One set of petitions that forced the recall came from voters upset by Messinger and Lawson voting to appoint former Mayor Rusty Geisler to the job of city manager in August 2012. Petition language accuses Geisler of earning the job without having a bachelor's degree as required in the job description and being appointed to the job without it being publicly posted. The other petition accused Messinger and Lawson of acting three days before a scheduled City Council meeting in May 2013 to fill a vacancy created by the defeat of former council member Warren Peterson in an election the previous week. According to that petition, Peterson was allowed to vote on the replacement, with newly-elected Councilman Pete Weber left out of the process. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
