An investigation is now underway after police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect after he opened fire on them in Niles late Friday night. Officers from Niles Police, Michigan State Police, and the Berrien County Sheriff's Department responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Long John Silver's restaurant. Investigators tell our newsgathering partners at NewsCenter 16 that the suspect opened fire on officers when he came out the back door of the restaurant. The suspect is believed to be in his 30s or 40s, and his name has not yet been released. He was armed with a handgun. The district manager for Long John Silver's says while their location in South Bend has been robbed in the past, this was the first such incident at their Niles restaurant in over a decade.
