St. Joseph Commmissioners Hear Budget Proposal

The presentation by St. Joseph City Manager Richard Lewis on the next fiscal year's budget turned into a lengthy discussion on how to fund the continued operations of the Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library. Lewis said an option that needs to be discussed is a possible millage increase in the library millage.

Listen:

Lewis pulled the tax increase off the table as a possibility after hearing from commissioners, who were opposed to asking residents for more money. The increase would bring in an estimated $44,000 a year. Lewis added he has been in discussions with St. Joseph Township Manager Tim Fenderbosch about possibly increasing the money put into the system by the township and noted a district library system could also be created with Benton Harbor and Benton Township in a few years. A public hearing on the budget will be held on May 12.
