Hearing Tuesday On Fate Of Benton Harbor Recall

A hearing is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday before Judge John Dewane on the request by Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler for a stay of the Benton Harbor mayoral recall election. Tyler made the request on Friday after election fraud charges were filed against Ed Pinkney of Benton Township and James Cornelius of Benton Harbor. Elections officials are pushing to have the election delayed until after the legal cases are completed and the clerk's office is able to fully investigate the petitions that were submitted to recall Mayor James Hightower. Both Pinkney and Cornelius are accused of allowing people to sign more than one petition, and Pinkney faces a felony charge of election forgery for allegedly changing the dates on petitions. Mayor Hightower called for the investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff's Department after he was informed of those issues.
