"The brutal winter months definitely took a toll on the first quarter of 2014." Those are the words of Gary Walter with the Southwestern Michigan Association of REALTORS. Last month, the total dollar volume dropped 14% from March of last year. The average selling price also fell, that was down 10% from a year ago. Nine fewer houses sold this past March than in March of 2013, for a 4% drop in sales. Nationally, existing-home sales were essentially flat in March, while the growth in home prices moderated, that's according to the National Association of Realtors. Regionally, first-time buyers accounted for 30% of purchases in March, up from 28% in February. The REALTORS report covers Berrien, and the western half of Van Buren and Cass Counties.
