This is Wildfire Prevention Week in Michigan. According to the Department of Natural Resources, most wildfires in the state happen in the spring from April to June. Dry leaves from last fall along with fallen pine needles and brown grass can ignite quickly given the right circumstances. Burning yard waste is legal in some areas, but to do so you'll need to get a permit from your local fire department. The DNR has several tips to protect your home and your property, including making sure your gutters, eaves, porches and decks are clear of leaves and other debris, keeping the lawn hydrated and maintained, and removing dead vegetation within 30 to 100 feet of the house or any building that you don't want to lose to fire. More tips are available online at firewise.msu.edu.
