County-wide Senior Services Millage Proposal Rejected

The Van Buren County Board of Commissioners rejected a proposal on Tuesday that would have placed a county-wide senior services millage on the August ballot. Proponents said the measure would consolidate the collection of some $767 thousand dollars, distribute the funds to townships and local entities in the amount they currently receive, and there would be no loss of services. Opponents said, however, that local control over the money currently collected for services would be lost and, because of that, senior services would be reduced. More than three-quarters of Michigan’s 83 counties currently levy a county-wide millage for senior services.
