A lawsuit against the state over unfunded special education mandates has been settled, and payments are now going out. Berrien RESA has received just over $9,200 of the $1.35 million settlement. According to Berrien RESA Superintendent Kevin Ivers, the lawsuit was filed for reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for students. The money received by RESA covers the costs of filing the suit and reimbursing the students for those expenses. Ivers noted it is a good thing to see that state realize the mandates were wrong and he's pleased with the settlement.
