40 Student Teams And Their Robots Are Competing In FIRST Competition In St. Joe

The 2014 FIRST Robotics District Competition has started at St. Joseph High School. The event features 40 high school teams and their robots from across the state. Founder of FIRST, Dean Kamen, was the keynote speaker at the open ceremony. He says the robotics competition combines the excitement of varsity sport with hands-on training in science and technology.

Kamen wants to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science heroes. His goal is to get FIRST into every school across the country. He says 20-years of data show how it benefits students.

Congressman Fred Upton was in attendance.

Whirlpool Corporation has sponsored local youth teams in the FIRST competitions for four years. They are again a major player this year. Matches began Friday morning and conclude Saturday afternoon in the Field House.
