Lighthouse Forever Fund Campaign Kicking Off

The Lighthouse Forever Fund Committee is getting set to launch its efforts to pull in $2 million to restore the lighthouses on the North Pier in St. Joseph.

Former St. Joseph Mayor Bob Judd is the chairman of the fundraising committee and updated the St. Joe City Commission Monday night on the launch of the campaign. He says one focus will be trying to get people to imagine what the pier would look like without the lighthouses in place with the thought that failing to preserve them will have that result. Judd says the area economy will take a hit because the structures are an important tourist attraction. He adds generations of residents see the lighthouses as part of the region's identity as well. In 2008, the U.S. Coast Guard declared the St. Joseph lighthouses were no longer needed as a navigational aid and transfered ownership to the city last August. Judd says the lighthouses are part of the identity of the entire region, and part of their fundraising campaign will be to show people what it would look like if they're lost by falling into disrepair.
