Sidewalk Item Rule Tweaks In The Works In Downtown St. Joseph

A meeting is expected next week between St. Joseph City Manager Richard Lewis, St. Joseph Today executive director Jill Stone and merchants in the city's downtown regarding possible changes to allow for items to be placed on sidewalks. Lewis updated the city commission on the proposed ideas on Monday night at a special meeting, saying they're working on being more clear on the details of what is and what is not allowed.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires at least three feet clearance on sidewalks, with a preference for five. Lewis says the proposed changes will allow for compliance with no problem on State Street and Broad Street, but some issues could arise on Pleasant Street. Last year, several merchants took part in a pilot program allowing for sidewalk sales, but that is not specifically being addressed as yet. Permits would be required for merchants to have things on the sidewalk in front of their stores, and those will be free.
