Life Rings Approved For South Pier At Silver Beach County Park

Following months of discussion, life rings will be added to the South Pier at Silver Beach County Park this spring. The Berrien County Board of Commissioners approved the move Thursday morning. There was some resistance due to the pier being owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but Commissioner Bob Wooley said that's a moot point and safety needs to be addressed.

The commission rejected a separate resolution to hold off on taking action until reaching an agreement with the city of St. Joseph to have the same action done on the North Pier at Tiscornia Park. St. Joseph Mayor Mike Garey sent a letter to the county board this week informing them the city will not look into life rings until at least 2016 following the renovation of the lighthouses. Maria McKenna of South Bend addressed the county commission before they debated a pair of resolutions on life rings for a little over an hour Thursday morning.

The life ring project carries an estimated price tag of $40,000, which worries members of the Berrien County Tea Party like Bernd Krebs.

Indiana Michigan Power is offering a $10,000 donation, while another donation has been offered of the life rings. Both still need official action by the county board to accept, and the U.S. Army Corps also needs to approve the plan.
