The St. Joseph Harbor will be dredged this year. Congressman Fred Upton says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has included $1.5 million to dredge the harbor in its final alocation of funding for harbor operations and maintenance for the remainder of the current fiscal year. The harbor had not been included in President Obama's budget. Upton and others from both parties succeeded in getting the federal government to allocate $30 million out of additional money put toward the Army Corps in January for work in the Great Lakes. The St.Joseph Republican is also continuing to push for passage of a bipartisan bill to ensure all federal revenues collected through the Harbor Maintenance Tax are fully used and not left unspent in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund. That fund has a surplus of over $7 billion, and Upton says the money is left unspent as a budget gimmick to offset other federal spending.
