Notre Dame Tennis Player Latest Athlete To Reveal Sexual Orientation

Michael Sam is set to make history by becoming the first openly gay player in the NFL once he's drafted this spring, and the NBA's Jason Collins is the first openly gay player in that league. Statistics will tell you they can't be the only ones, professionally or at the college level. One is in our area. Matt Dooley is a senior at Notre Dame and on the tennis team. He came out to his teammates last fall after a suicide attempt in 2011. Dooley wrote an article published this week on SB Nation's OutSports website detailing his struggles for years with his sexual orientation. He credits projects like columunist Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" initiative for helping his outlook, and says he wrote his article to provide support to closeted gay athletes that they are "never alone." Dooley's article has been shared on Facebook over 4,700 times already. WSJM has reached out to Dooley to discuss his article and the response he's received since it was published on Monday.
