Michigan State Police say Tuesday's accident on M-139 in Benton Township between a school bus and minivan was caused by the van's driver falling asleep at the wheel. The bus, which was empty of children at the time, was driving southbound when its driver saw the van going north. The van crossed the center line. The bus swerved, but was unable to miss the van and stuck it head-on. The van was driven by a 28-year old female from the Detroit area. She admitted being sleepy from working long hours. The Jaws of Life were needed to cut her out of the vehicle. She and her three passengers were taken to Lakeland Hospital. The driver and monitor of the bus were not injured.
