St. Joseph Commission Nixes Downtown LED Sign

The sign in downtown St. Joseph at the corner of Broad and Main won't be replaced with an electronic sign anytime soon. City commissioners shot down the proposal, with several noting they have only received negative comments about the proposal. City Manager Richard Lewis noted his feedback had been mostly positive.

Listen:

Mayor Mike Garey said he had received split reaction, about 50-50, on the sign. He added he didn't make up his mind to oppose the idea until Sunday, and compared the city's message sign to the manual scoreboard at Wrigley Field. Commissioner Jeff Richards said there was no way he could get on board with the change.

Listen:

Commissioner Mary Goff added she did not receive any comments in support of the change and noted she felt it would ruin the "quaint" atmosphere of downtown. Lewis had proposed the replacement as a way to get information up more quickly than designing and printing actual physical signs.
