Berrien County Board Criticized For Muslim Invocation

Religious freedom is a right guaranteed to everyone in this country by the U.S. Constitution, but there are a few in Berrien County riled by an invocation at a local government meeting that wasn't Christian. On February 6th, Islamic Association of Southwest Michigan president Mir Quddus gave the invocation before the Berrien County Board of Commissioners meeting. Bernd Krebs of Royalton Township told the commission Thursday that he was offended.

Ray Kirkus of New Buffalo questioned why an Islamic prayer was allowed to open the meeting.

Quddus gave the invocation in both English and Arabic, explaining each line as he went along. One of the last verses used in the Koran reading was from Moses, as the Old Testament prophet from the Christian Bible also appears in Muslim scripture. No commissioners responded to the criticism and questions that came from Krebs and Kirkus. from Krebs or Ray Kirkus of New Buffalo at Thursday morning's meeting.
