Upton Discusses Affordable Care Act Impact On Local Goverments

Local governments all over Michigan are finding out just how much the Affordable Care Act is costing them. Many are shocked to get the bill from the federal government for taxes and fees related to the new health insurance overhaul. Berrien Springs Village President Milton Richter told reporters he was amazed by what was charged.

Congressman Fred Upton said for larger municipalities, the bill is even bigger.

President Obama has made many changes through executive order to the Affordable Care Act, and Upton says there is an effort growing on Capitol Hill to make a pretty major change. It would revise the threshold where an employer would have to provide access to healthcare from the current level.

He notes both sides of the aisle are involved in the modification.

Elected officials from every municipality in the Berrien County were invited to a discussion with Upton Wednesday morning in Berrien Springs. All had the same story as Berrien Springs and St. Joseph when it comes to the costs being handed down to them from Washington. Upton said he wants to hear from communities throughout the 6th District and the rest of the state to learn how they're dealing with the issue.
