Van Buren County Commission Seeks Further Probe Of Sheriff

Michigan State Police are being given a report from the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners alleging a "violation of public trust" by Sheriff Dale Gribler. He is accused of using a county credit card to purchase four suits from Jos. A. Bank for nearly $1,400 and allowing his son to use the card for over $1,300 in purchases from ABC Warehouse. In a four-page letter to Gribler, commissioners accuse him of lying to two commissioners investigating the purchases and note quote, "your refusal to tell the truth demonstrates a lack of integrity and respect" for the county. Gribler is being ordered to repay the money spent on the card. The county commission noted it disagrees with the decision of Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz to not prosecute the sheriff because he could find "no criminal intent," though he added Gribler used "bad judgement." The letter closes with the conclusion quote, "that if the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners had the power and authority to do so, you would be removed from office immediately."
