Hightower Defends Loan In Weekly Address

With a $2.3 million debt consolidation loan from the state in hand, Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower is still working to fend off critics who say the money was not needed. In his weekly YouTube address, he used an example of having 10 credit card payments with interest rates ranging from 8% to 24%, with each needing a payment.

Hightower added the city could have been on the hook for even more money had the action not been taken by emergency manager Tony Saunders.

The City Commission twice voted down applying for the loan, but those votes were not binding on the action taken by Saunders.
