Nearly 900 crashes were handled last month by Michigan State Police in Southwest Michigan. The harsher than normal winter weather caused 66-rollover accidents. 291 vehicles had to be towed, with 42 of them being semis. In one instance 16 semis and several passenger cars were involved in crashes along I-94 near Hartford. Portions of the freeway were shut down for up to six-hours that day. Troops say the evolution of the State Police Regional Policing Model, gives them the ability to handle resources to manage those kinds of events - without impacting services to local communities. The MSP's 5th District is made up of Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Calhoun, Branch, Allegan, and Barry Counties.
