A garage fire completely destroyed the home of a Bainbridge Township family early Sunday morning. Phil Gargano and his wife called 9-1-1 at 2:30 a.m. after she woke to find the house on fire and they safely got their four children and three foster children out of the house. He crawled back through the smoke to rescue a fourth foster child, identified as a four-year-old girl. The fire started near the electric meter in the garage, which was underneath the house, The North Berrien Fire Department was assisted by Watervliet, Sister Lakes and Keeler Township in fighting the flames for several hours, though the home is a total loss. North Berrien Fire Chief Bob Ruff called the Gargano family “amazing people” and added everyone is thankful there were no injuries.
