Timber Ridge Ski Area in Gobles will host the 2014 Special Olympics Michigan Southwest Region Winter Games on Tuesday. Organizers are expecing 175 athletes to compete in events including downhill and giant slalom alpine skiing and snowboarding, cross country skiing and showshoeing. The event runs all day at Timber Ridge in Gobles, and 50 coaches and 50 volunteers are working with the athletes. Statewide, Special Olympics Michigan helps nearly 20,000 children and adults with disabilities get active. Athletes will compete Tuesday from Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazo, Kent, Ottawa and Van Buren counties.
