For the region of West Michigan, employment numbers are up, despite that not being the case in the listening area. The Upjohn Institute reports second quarter figures for 2013 increased 0.8%, a gain of 6,300 jobs. In the Niles-Benton Harbor region, employment fell by 0.4%. The quarter's job losses caused the unemployment rate to climb to 9% from 8.7% the previous quarter. There was one area of growth, government employment, which grew by 1.2% during the second quarter.
