For the second time in two years, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is confirming a new record catfish catch. Dale Blakley of Niles caught a flathead catfish on Barron Lake in Cass County on Sunday, and the record was confirmed this week. The fish weighed 52 pounds and was just over 46-inches long. Rodney Akey of Niles caught the last record catfish on the St. Joseph River in Berrien County in May 2012, with that fish weighing 49.8 pounds. Before Akey's record, the mark had stood since 1943. DNR officials aren't sure how the fish that Blakley caught wound up in Barron Lake, as they typically inhabit large river systems and there are no direct connections from those to the lake. Illegal stocking is suspected, but that will not take away from the record.
