Police in South Bend are releasing the name of the man suspected of the arson and robbery at the Niles Walmart on Sunday. He was 31-year-old James Turns of Granger, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday night after trying to carjack a woman and attempting to break into a home. Those incidents happened after the Berrien County Sheriff's Department attempted to make contact with him once they identified him. Turns set fire to the kids clothing section of the Walmart early Sunday morning, and while the staff was distracted he stole several thousand dollars worth of Apple electronics. Surveillance video showed him walking through the crime on Saturday, including parking in the same spot.
