Silver Beach Pizza Deck Proposal Appears Dead

It appears that the possibility of Silver Beach Pizza expanding with a deck above the current structure is dead for the time being. At a study session Thursday night, St. Joseph City Commissioners told restaurant owners that they will not approve anything that blocks even a little bit of the view of the Whirlpool Fountain from Lake Bluff Park. Silver Beach Pizza owner Tony Bertig was asked after the meeting if the plans are going to be shelved for good.

Bertig approached the City Commission several months ago with a basic idea to add the deck so patrons could dine with a clear view of Lake Michigan from the restaurant.

City Commissioner Chris Heugel offered this opinion.

Commissioner Mary Goff's sentiments echoed Heugel's.

The plans included rebuilding the ramp down from Lake Bluff Park to make it compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, and were told that's an issue the city has studied for years and it won't be handled by the private sector when something is done.
